Cariño

Edgewater·Modern Mexican·$$$

Cariño earns the second spot because Chef Norman Fenton has built something genuinely rare: a tasting menu with Mexican soul that neither condescends nor cosplays.

On a stretch of Broadway in Edgewater that most restaurant hunters would walk past without slowing, Cariño occupies a room with the focused calm of a much more famous address. The twelve-to-sixteen-course menu traces a broad Latin geography — huitlacoche ravioli with fried corn silk, lamb tartare dressed in al pastor spices, a michelada oyster that arrives in a tajín-rimmed shell with clamato dashi and Modelo foam. Each course lands with the confidence of a kitchen that has thought this through.

The taco omakase counter, where guests watch the team build each small taco to order, is among the most engaging formats in the city. The room balances accessibility with ambition better than most places at this price point, and the pacing is generous without dragging. One Michelin star; deserving of the conversation for more.
