Anelya

Avondale·Modern Ukrainian·$$

Anelya sits at twenty-nine because Clark has brought the same care to Ukrainian cuisine that he applied to Parachute, and the result is a restaurant that takes a community's culinary heritage completely seriously.

On Elston Avenue in Avondale, Anelya opened as a personal project from chef Johnny Clark, who built the neighborhood's reputation for serious food with Parachute. The restaurant is named for his Ukrainian grandmother; the tile pattern echoing the floor of her childhood home in Kharkiv is visible throughout. The menu draws on classic Ukrainian dishes — varenyky, borscht, slow-braised preparations — and presents them with a contemporary technique that amplifies rather than obscures their origin.

The Michelin Guide recognition, the first for any Ukrainian restaurant, was significant not just as an award but as an acknowledgment that Ukrainian cuisine had been unjustly absent from that conversation. In a city with deep Ukrainian-American roots, Anelya now serves as a cultural reference point as well as a dining destination.
